I recently discovered that I am guilty. I am guilty of cheating on my business. Now, most relationships do not respond kindly to external exploits. But then again, most relationships are not quite like the relationship you have with your business (or businesses). Let’s consider this the relationship to your opportunities, rather than something more confined.
The challenge as an entrepreneur, at least as far as I can tell, is learning how to focus all of that drive and creative spirit and channel it into one thing that you know will be great. Sure, it is easy to do initially. The initial allure is what begins any relationship. But to maintain that focus on that one thing without succumbing to temptation is a huge challenge. It is also unnecessary, when you romp in moderation.
That is why today, I am guilty of a minor escapade with my webhost and grabbed yet another domain name. Domain names are so much fun to think up and grab. They are cheap, easy to discover and almost like creating real estate out of thin air. For those few moments of discovery I can create something beautiful. Or at least, the thought of something beautiful. I created the dirt, I still need to build the house.
My latest affair was with the domain, againuntil.com. If you go there, you will notice a basic redirect for now. I have ideas that are boundless for what to attach to that domain. For now it will camp out in all of it’s glory without wearing too much. Just like the best with their amorous ways do.
You may find yourself with moments when you just need to get a bit creative. You believe you should intensely focus on whatever you are working on and it deserves your focus. Though a quick tryst with wherever your creativity takes you may be just what you need to stay loyal to your current idea.
So might I suggest that, like many things that are in cages too small, your focus needs some time to exercise, expand and flirt a bit with other ideas. Without this activity you risk losing the very talent that brought you where you are and that would be a shame. Maybe you get a domain name, maybe a new business card, maybe you come up with an entirely new business idea and get others to run with it. Whatever it is, let your creative juices flow.
Then get back to work. Relationships that last will take time and effort and will not be satisfied with part time attendance.
