Action Jackson started Jackson’s Yard Care and took his business to another level. He lays out how he got started, some of the challenges and, most importantly, having the right frame of mind to make miracles happen.
On top of building his yard care empire, Action took things a step, or leap, further by starting a training program for those that want to be in the yard care business. He has systematized this training and in the very first year that he started this, he gave 19 people new employment and made three entrepreneurs. The man is a business building machine that helps others grow as well.
Listen as Action Jackson explains how he started his yard care business, from the first employee, to the bigger and bigger warehouses and onward into training to help others. This show will get you jazzed to get your business going.

Because you have an option to be around that person. If you’re negative, I don’t want it to have nothing to do with you, because remember I’m protecting my energy. And if I bring a negative energy around me, then I’m the problem.
James [00:00:18]:

Action Jackson [00:00:42]:
It’s wonderful, man. I can’t complain. Everything’s been busy and dramatic my way this week.
James [00:00:48]:
Dramatic Authentic in a good way?
Action Jackson [00:00:50]:
All the time. Always positive. I love it.
James [00:00:53]:
I love it. So I was thinking you’re in the landscaping business Yeah. But we’re just chatting off Care and you got stuff going on in all directions.
Action Jackson [00:01:00]:
So Yes, I do.
James [00:01:01]:
How about we start by just listing the businesses you got going On?
Action Jackson [00:01:05]:
My main business is The landscaping Business, lawn care service. And then my Call Business is is a training program, and that’s a placement business. And then my other business is, print on demand and that’s promotional products.
James [00:01:23]:
Alright. Mhmm. I’m gonna take those out of order a little bit. Yep. Let’s start with the training program. Okay. Because I didn’t know about that until, whatever, Friday. I don’t know.
James [00:01:32]:
A few days ago. So tell me about the training program because I know that people in your industry, well, any industry really, are in desperate need of good employees, show up, do the job, trustworthy, all that jazz.
Action Jackson [00:01:46]:
That’s absolutely right, man. So it’s a good it’s a good conversation to have, especially if if your audience is out there in the industry, field. So basically, I got to where I was at today and running the program is basically having that that that need of good employees and also skilled employees. Right? And and most importantly, employees that show up.
James [00:02:12]:
True story. True story. I always joke with my crew that good help is hard to find. Yeah. And I can find bad help. No problem.
Action Jackson [00:02:19]:
Care on, man. You Call pay a lot of money for bad help, can’t you?
James [00:02:22]:
Yeah. Definitely. Yeah.
Action Jackson [00:02:26]:
So, but anyways, how the program came together, the year before last, I was, having a struggle with my employees in 02/2023. And I was off and on doing training programs for my staff members. And every time every year that I did a training program, I can see how successful I was. Alright. So then the last year I didn’t do it. Right? And I see how bad it can actually be. So I was actually looking to see if I can get professional landscaping training help out there so I can be like, you know, just another thing off of my plate The I have to do. And when I looked there online, I realized that nobody did a hands on training for lawn care landscaping training.
Action Jackson [00:03:19]:
So I was like, man, this The this can actually be something very bigger than just my business. This is something I can do to help all landscaping and lawn care businesses in our Care, in The in our industry. So what I did was, man, I just went to the drawing table. I put together a program that actually helped that that The that knit in our industry. So now what I did was put together a program, a curriculum that showcases hands on and verbiage so they can go ahead and see both sides of what we deal with in our in our industry. And that turns out to be very helpful for our business and to other business in the very first year. In the very first year that we started this, we gave 19 people new employment and we made three entrepreneurs. Holy cow.
James [00:04:19]:
Those three entrepreneurs, The three people started landscaping Business. Yes, sir. Holy cow. Yep. How do I not know about this?
Action Jackson [00:04:26]:
Ma’am, it’s just only it’s only one year in the making. And our and our next class is that’s the reason why we’re doing the Super Bowl gala, this Sunday so we can bring in funds, so we can support the class for our second season in March.
James [00:04:45]:
So tell me a story here because you’re talking landscaping training. So
Action Jackson [00:04:48]:
is this mowing? Mowing, hardscaping, the maintenance side of it. So it covers it’s a four week course that covers everything that has to do pretty much with landscaping. So it gets somebody up to speed real quick. And the best thing about it is that it engages with the personnel that’s trying to learn and give us an appropriate time to actually learn Care we’re giving them back a %, of our time to show them professionals too. And I’m also getting other people out in the industry that’s willing to come into the program and give their expertise as well. So there’s other people in other companies that’s coming in that’s, helping us out with this as well.
James [00:05:40]:
Oh, they’re landscaping companies.
Action Jackson [00:05:41]:
Oh, I see. Yep. So for instance, one of our main guys is Ross Crosby. He’s from Above the Res Property Management. He does the hardscape portion. And then we have our guy Cedric Page. He does the he does the he he does the safety part about it. And then we have other people that has health health awareness as well that comes On, that does that does that type of portions Calls we we look at it as all in one package.
Action Jackson [00:06:15]:
Okay. So at the end of the day, when you come to this program, you are you are gonna be learning everything. Not everything, but a bundle of knowledge that’s in this industry.
James [00:06:27]:
Alright.
Action Jackson [00:06:28]:
Mhmm.
James [00:06:29]:
So what is The or what was the standard before? Hire Jackson, say Hire person and
Action Jackson [00:06:35]:
put them On, you know, trust that their resume is good. Good luck. Right? Trusting that the resume is, factual and going by The word. But I’m telling you, man, there’s a lot of actors out there. So that’s what that was another portion of The reason why we decided to go the route we is. Now every employee that doesn’t have four years, five years experience and we can go ahead and, if they have references The we actually say you got to go through the program because the year that we have with the people that went through the program is night and day.
James [00:07:14]:
Oh, wow.
Action Jackson [00:07:15]:
It’s clear night and day.
James [00:07:17]:
Very cool. Yep. Alright. So when you say night and day, is this just confidence, skill set, when you’re talking to them, they know the nomenclature of the industry?
Action Jackson [00:07:25]:
All of that, actually. I couldn’t I couldn’t even On and add to that, but it’s exactly like that. And it’s the confidence on our side to have for them to go out there and assassinate the job that we have for them.
James [00:07:41]:
Tell me a story about customer service. Mhmm. Is that part of the training as well?
Action Jackson [00:07:46]:
No. See The customer service is done on my, office side. Okay. And then we have our office staff that has those those weekly meetings, those end of the week meetings, and those prep meetings to get everybody On board on how to treat the customers. And then also I almost forgot On the Care, we also do talk about that customer service is a part of the staff out in the field’s job, right? To deal with the customers. But we make it very clear. We have green shirts, we have red shirts. Green shirts is our formats.
Action Jackson [00:08:21]:
Green shirts is the ones that’s gonna interact with the customers. The red shirts is the ones that’s out there performing the Care. Right? So you can Care clear what’s the difference between who to talk to, who not to talk to with the customers. And the customers, they see it very clearly like, okay, it’s one red shirt and it’s probably and then they probably see two to three I mean, a green shirt and they see two to three red shirts. So Got it. Very clear.
James [00:08:49]:
I always think of Star Trek with the red shirts. I don’t know if you know that reference. Red shirts are always a character that gets killed. So don’t want that. So it’s interesting from a employee point of view. Is there a goal to advance to a green shirt?
Action Jackson [00:09:04]:
Oh, all the time. Oh, no. No. No. So we want everybody to be leaders. Right? So we we cover about 20 different services. So On our landscaping and lawn care, services. So we want everybody to get to be that green shirt.
Action Jackson [00:09:23]:
So we got different levels. How do you get there? Showing up on time, right, wearing your uniform And then we we look at that through the month and we we we use that database to scale people up.
James [00:09:38]:
Oh, nice. Okay. So who is actually looking at that? Is that you or is that you have team?
Action Jackson [00:09:42]:
The staff members. Yep. I got four staff members that’s in the office now. We just had three and then we just hired somebody else just this week.
James [00:09:51]:
Oh, nice. Congratulations. Thank you.
Action Jackson [00:09:53]:
It’s a big deal for us because customer service is our number one thing other than safety. You know what I’m saying? Because I feel like if somebody is getting treated with a white glove service, then they The, nine times out of 10, they’ll repeat business with you.
James [00:10:09]:
Oh, absolutely. Definitely. Mhmm. Especially, I would think for an industry where you’re at, where your competition is terrible at answering their phone. Yep. They’re not very nice if you do get a BOLD of them. They may or may not show up. True.
James [00:10:22]:
Just rinse, repeat. Just about any service industry has the same problem. So when you actually do answer your phone and show up and treat people well, people are like,
Action Jackson [00:10:32]:
oh, yeah. Referral, referral. Referral, referral. And that’s what we need because if you look at the times that we’re having right now with no snow, it really puts a dent in our game. Yeah. But when you really look at it for the The companies that’s really worrying about the back end and what can we do, these are the times Care you can navigate those things. Right? These are the times that you can go back to the drawing board and say what worked, what didn’t work because you have so much time on your hands. And instead of getting panicky and saying, it ain’t no snow coming.
Action Jackson [00:11:05]:
What we’re gonna do? Let’s focus on what we’re about to do. Right. And I always feel like and this is how I got my name, Action Jackson. I always respond to pressure. Nice. I feel like I’m at my best when the pressure is on. Alright. So you know when the pressure is on like tight on finances right now because The ain’t no money coming in, what are you On do? Are you gonna sit there and panic? Are you gonna sit there and whine? Are you gonna sit there and, scratch your head? Or are you gonna react to it? And how you react determines what type of person you are.
James [00:11:42]:
True story. Yes, sir. True story. I love it. Just let the people understand, we’re in Wisconsin.
Action Jackson [00:11:48]:
Yep.
James [00:11:49]:
It’s February. I mean, approaching mid February. There’s no snow on the ground. So it’s too cold to do lawn mowing and stuff like that, but there’s no snow to do plowing. So right now, it’s either twiddle thumbs or or get yourself better to prepare for the spring that’s coming.
Action Jackson [00:12:04]:
That’s what we do. Every time. Every year all season, we’re always On our lab. We’re always working on it. We’re always upgrading. And, it gives the time to work on that other business that I was telling you about, Care print on demand. So Yeah. You know? I love it.
Action Jackson [00:12:20]:
Sometimes financially, but like I said, Call to the well to the challenge. Nice.
James [00:12:26]:
I love it. Let’s shift gears and talk about the print on demand thing.
Action Jackson [00:12:29]:
I love that. I love that conversation.
James [00:12:31]:
So you got landscaping, training for landscaping and then poof print on demand.
Action Jackson [00:12:36]:
Yeah.
James [00:12:37]:
Yeah. So let’s just chat initially what all The your print on demand business entail?
Action Jackson [00:12:42]:
Promotional products. So whatever you can think of like pens, cards, flyers, wall decorations, window decorations Care decals and then vehicle Calls, that’s what we’re into. Right? So what we we was faced with, I was telling you off camera was when we changed our logo, which you can see on my my my, sweater is that we was faced with, man, we gotta change all our all our trucks, all our equipment. You got, we gotta take it off and reprint. And just just when I was thinking, I was like, Call, we got over 20 trucks and trailers. So right away, I’m thinking $20 because half a wrap is around a thousand bucks. So, you know, I like I said, I do good when pressure is on. So what I thought about, I said, man, why why should we give away that $20.30 grand? Because we ain’t talking even about the shirts.
Action Jackson [00:13:38]:
We ain’t talking about The hats. We ain’t talking about the cards. Remember, we gotta do cards. We gotta do, we like to do pens to people The you like it right?
James [00:13:47]:
On signs.
Action Jackson [00:13:48]:
Lawn signs, everything. When you think about everything that got to do about how do you present your business promotionally, promotional wise. So I was like man let’s look into it and see actually what it cost to get some of this equipment. So I did my due diligence and my team did The due diligence and we came across this machine. And I realized that it was this big expo going down in Vegas. And my experience with expos is because that’s how we got Giovanni at an expo, the famous dog. Everything on the short room floor, they On sell at a lower price because they took it out the box and they used it.
James [00:14:31]:
Call, alright. I see where you’re going.
Action Jackson [00:14:33]:
You get where you going? Yeah. So make a long story short, we decided to go down to Vegas to learn more about it, ask questions, hands on. Because we just got our first year training. So we thinking hands on, getting to know, getting to know it, visually not over spraying over YouTube and everything is On to be our best option. So we went down there with a plan and I actually got the machine I wanted and not only the machine that I wanted but the bigger version of it.
James [00:15:05]:
Oh nice.
Action Jackson [00:15:05]:
Yep. Call, almost the same price of what I was thinking about The price of the smaller version of it.
James [00:15:11]:
Alright.
Action Jackson [00:15:12]:
So we got that and then I, you know, everything leads to the next step. So I met another guy Care. He said, hey, if you meet me down at the Indiana show, I’ll give you this one for this price. So I did that. So I found myself for a month just rolling in On this, like, travel, journey. And I was like, oh, I slept in my Care. The saved money on hotel fees. Right? Because I got a travel van too.
Action Jackson [00:15:43]:
So I drove The. Me and my famous dog, On, went down to Indiana and got the second one. So we ended up getting like $30 worth of equipment. We we I paid for a $2,500 schooling for me and my staff to start learning this stuff. And right now, we’re already starting to print, Call, and put Action down within the first four months now.
James [00:16:07]:
That’s awesome.
Action Jackson [00:16:08]:
Yep. It’s four to five months. I’m waiting now. I get lost because there’s a lot of things going on. Yeah. It’s alright.
James [00:16:13]:
No way. No one’s gonna get put
Action Jackson [00:16:15]:
that aside us. According to
James [00:16:16]:
the calendar here. Right?
Action Jackson [00:16:18]:
Right. So, you know, so, yeah. That’s how that works. And now we we can print anything, print and cut anything high quality cut I mean, high quality designs, man. And it’s just an awesome time that I’m living in right now. I’m really excited.
James [00:16:33]:
So this is essentially a machine to print on vinyl? Mhmm. Vinyl. And I mentioned by format.
Action Jackson [00:16:38]:
Mhmm. Okay. Yep. And then you you you know whenever you see something, it’s always pieced together. Mhmm. You know what I’m saying? You might not know it but it’s pieced together depending on how big the machine is. Sometimes, you know, the guys the big guys out Care, they got the bigger machines where they Call just print the whole thing, stitch it together or whatever. But we’re working our way up all the way to wherever we On to go.
James [00:17:01]:
Right on. Mhmm. Right on. That is cool.
Action Jackson [00:17:04]:
Yeah. So that’s pretty dope.
James [00:17:05]:
That’s it’s funny how you’re describing the life of the entrepreneur entrepreneur. Because you’re essentially like, hey, man, we gotta live in the van or not live in the van. We gotta sleep in the van.
Action Jackson [00:17:14]:
It was fun too. I love it. So The staying in my van too. It’s not like a Call van. It’s I set it up. I had this van for about twelve years and it was set up for travel.
James [00:17:26]:
Oh, nice. Okay. So it wasn’t like you’re just sleeping on a dumpster or anything.
Action Jackson [00:17:29]:
Oh, no. No. No.
James [00:17:30]:
Okay. It’s classier. But the idea and I suppose it wasn’t 30 below or anything.
Action Jackson [00:17:35]:
No. It was perfect where I had the windows open. No. I think it was, let me
James [00:17:39]:
see, November. Alright. I mean, for when November normally isn’t what it has been.
Action Jackson [00:17:46]:
Right. It was pretty nice.
James [00:17:48]:
Not so bad. Not so bad.
Action Jackson [00:17:49]:
Not so bad.
James [00:17:49]:
The motorcycle weather’s not Not
Action Jackson [00:17:51]:
so bad for a small fry.
James [00:17:52]:
No. That’s all good. Let’s shift gears into your landscaping business because that’s a big one.
Action Jackson [00:17:57]:
Yep.
James [00:17:58]:
So when did you first start that?
Action Jackson [00:18:00]:
I opened the doors in 02/2009.
James [00:18:03]:
Okay. Alright.
Action Jackson [00:18:03]:
So it’s been It’s not a bit. This is about sixteen Yard. Yeah. Nice. Yeah. April Call be sixteen years. Alright.
James [00:18:09]:
So what made you get into the landscaping
Action Jackson [00:18:12]:
game? Well, I was working for my grandfather and I did that for about a year and a half and that was about in 02/2005 and I mean, 02/2006. And then I took a break and then when and I had to take a break to find myself. Right? I had to do some soul digging and figure out what I’m on this earth to do. What’s my purpose? It was that time of my life where I was trying to figure out where am I going, what am I about to do, how am I about to do it, Blah dee blah dee blah. So I took about a year and a half trying to soul search that. And when I did, I kinda figured out, you know, let’s figure out what we’re gonna do professional wise. And I was like, well, you know, I’m good at telling jokes. So I thought about comedy and then I thought about, you know, comedy is not gonna work because then I gotta stay out late and then, you know, how alcohol gets I said The that can lead to alcoholism.
Action Jackson [00:19:05]:
I said, I don’t want that. And then I realized I was good with my hands. And then I said, well, I’m good with my hands. And then I said, well, what we gonna do in our hands? And I as I was thinking about that, you know, some time rolling in. I was driving I was driving around. I was just looking at properties for some odd reason. I was like, man, that grass grows every week. I see some of the same guy up there there every week.
Action Jackson [00:19:27]:
I say, man, that’s The industry that’s that’s not really tapped into. And and, you know, time. Right? Jesus Christ. How does it, I don’t know how that sorry for that. But when it goes off, it didn’t stop. So I was thinking, like, the industry that I’m looking at, like, man, has really tapped into. So as as people that I knew, nobody really talked about landscaping On lawn care. So I was looking at it like, man, this Care really be a good thing.
Action Jackson [00:20:00]:
So I put that in perspective and I said, you know what? I don’t On work in a office, not an office type. You know? Because you gotta draw the things that you’re not into out because I’m thinking about long distance. What can I do long distance? You’re talking time? Yeah. Long distance Okay. Time on how can I, you know, be okay by doing something and not just jumping into something and I do something The I’m out of it? So I said, well, yeah, I could work outside. I said, working outside, that’s where I’d rather be. So making a long story short, I chose landscape. I BOLD mowing at this time.
Action Jackson [00:20:39]:
Alright. But I knew it was gonna turn out to be something way much bigger. That’s the reason why it’s not called Jackson’s Lawn Care. Me naming this Jackson’s Yard Care was a very thoughtful thinking when I named it because I said yard that anything that involves with yard I can do now. And my name tells it all. So trimming, mowing, removal, new landscape. I was thinking about The, but I didn’t know how to do it back then. I just knew I was On Care involve into this.
Action Jackson [00:21:18]:
So I I decided the last of the lawn care was going to be it. And then I named The name. And then from there, it was just like history. It was just like, this is what I’m going to do. I know I ain’t going to probably pay myself for a long time because everything I’m a do, I’m a put it back in the business. I say, so every job that I found difficult, I’m a buy a tool that made my next job like this go way smoother. And it kinda evolved around that the whole time. And then while I was in in, 02/2009 and 02/2015, I also went back to I went I went to college as well and did two years of college for human services and then MATC.
Action Jackson [00:22:01]:
And then one day, I talked to a mentor of mine and, you know, he told me everything that I wanted to do in college, I could really do it On my business. And I thought about that and I went home and I thought about that and I said, you’re right. And I finished out the semester and that was like history for a schooling. But to make it interesting, I focused all my attention on business. And then three years later, MATC gave me a $30,000 contract. Woah. So nobody’s going in the
James [00:22:33]:
right direction there.
Action Jackson [00:22:34]:
So when I look back at that and you can look you can look at that series on my YouTube channel, j y c t d on YouTube. Go to the one where it says MATC and you get I’m showing my idea where when I went to school and then you can see my team out there exercising our services. And I think that was a highlight of, like, if if I had to look back, that was one of the main highlights of my careers.
James [00:23:02]:
That is cool. Yeah. So you first start out your Moen. Did you have employees or
Action Jackson [00:23:07]:
No.
James [00:23:07]:
It was you?
Action Jackson [00:23:08]:
Well, I have friends I have friends that helped me on with it, like, is in that sort. But throughout the couple of years, they kinda came and left.
James [00:23:20]:
Sure. Sure.
Action Jackson [00:23:21]:
Came and left, you know. And that was okay because my mind was already made up. I was like already here today in my mind in 02/2009. You get what I’m saying? Like I was I was focused. And so I didn’t care who was with me, who came and left. I kept The open minded. I didn’t put shame on them because they did it. You know? Because when you focus, The is like, you know, tunnel vision.
Action Jackson [00:23:50]:
Mhmm. You know? All all moves gotta be the right moves. All all small things gotta be made as big decisions because, you know, small things turn lead to bigger either problems if you let if you leave it On I mean, On you know, on on yourself. So Yeah.
James [00:24:08]:
It’s all a game.
Action Jackson [00:24:09]:
It’s all a game. So that’s where I was at, man. This is like a big journey for me, man. And I’m I’m really happy that I I had the the guts to figure out who I was in the early two thousands and and come up with a game plan because it really paid off in the long run.
James [00:24:27]:
I wanna dig into The, finding your Action, all that kind of stuff, early two thousands. Mhmm. In my mind, you’re just walking the earth like Care from Kung Fu kind of thing. But what were you doing? Were you working other places or
Action Jackson [00:24:39]:
Man, I was to be honest with you, I tried to give my time to somebody else. I was really I was in this time where I was like, I really On be involved with with, with, with somebody’s business that I can give my all to. And when I was getting denied, when they wasn’t hiring me, man, I remember one day I was a grown man. Right. And I went home and I cried to my mom and I was like, mom, ain’t nobody hiring me. Oh. Yeah. It’s because I was like, nobody’s hiring me and, I just On I just wanna be involved with something.
Action Jackson [00:25:17]:
And she looked at me and she said, son, things are gonna be alright. You got this. Because my dad was On entrepreneur. My grandfather was an entrepreneur. And when she and my mom my mother was that that caretaker, that lover, that always provided, like, that loving, grandmama feeling and that mother feeling. Right? So, you know, with those two sides in The, but that day really hit me when she told me things is gonna be okay. You got this. You gonna think of something.
Action Jackson [00:25:47]:
And instead of crying all the way into a bad situation, I really felt like, you know what? Why am I giving myself why am I thinking about giving somebody all of me when I’m young right now? I’m 20 I’m 22, 20 three. I can really focus this on my, like, own bit. I can do something for myself and create something. And that’s when things started revolving in my mind. And that’s where it came to, okay, how do we do this? And then I say, man, I’m lying to myself Call On some areas and I’m not comfortable, you know, in some areas about myself. And I say, first step is finding yourself. Mhmm. Finding your purpose.
Action Jackson [00:26:36]:
And that’s how I went down that journey.
James [00:26:38]:
Alright. So is it books or listening videos? Where’d you get your inspiration?
Action Jackson [00:26:44]:
I’m not I’m not a big book reader, but I’m always a good I’m always just always like looking out and observing and sucking it in. I’m always like a sponge. So what I do is I would just be quiet and listen a lot of times and I’ll go out there like my father. I Call to him. I’ll just watch how he conducts himself in his business, in his natural business settings. I’ll go out there and talk to my grandfather On his natural Business. And I Call just sit there for hours with some people in my in On my age range would be like, man, I’m gone. I’m out of here.
Action Jackson [00:27:26]:
You know what I’m saying? And then I also talk to strangers and I Call to, like, my stepfather at the time, Call Huddleston and stuff. And, you know, just sucking things in, man, just being a big sponge to the world, man. And then finding, like, religion wise, like, you know, can I find it that way? And I found out, you know, when I did that path, like On is not really in the church. I’m like, you don’t need I said people go to On. And this took a while for me to realize this. I say people are using one day out The week to be holy and doing things for the good, right reasons. And I noticed that. I said, man, what if I just try to do that every day? Well, Neville.
Action Jackson [00:28:14]:
Alright. I said, how can I have this same energy every day? How can I feel like every day is my birthday? And then I start working on myself as figuring out what’s my triggers. Right? What’s my triggers? What gets me mad? What makes me happy? What makes me sad?
James [00:28:30]:
Triggers both good and bad.
Action Jackson [00:28:31]:
Everywhere. All the way around the board. And then I ended up saying, okay, I need to protect myself through my energy. I don’t need to let people steal my energy. And I realized that’s the key. Energy is the key. Humbleness is the key. Open minded is the key.
Action Jackson [00:28:53]:
And, you know, not always trying to know something is the key. Understanding that sometimes your valuable moments is the best moments because you can you can actually take in things. And if you if you let it out the right way, it can be the best thing you can ever do because, you know, when you’re valuable, that’s your, like, weakest point. So I had to learn how to balance my life out in those areas. And when I finally came to those, judgments days, I was like, this is what I am. This is what I I’m here on this earth to do. And then from 02/2009, it was like the declaration page for me where this is it. This is where I’m at.
Action Jackson [00:29:40]:
That’s why I was kinda focused and I and I told myself every day I’m I’m On get up and I’m a be as positive as I could possibly be. I’m On stop saying no. I’m a stop saying because Book a stop saying the things that get you to, you know, have excuses and I’m not gonna be a excuse man. I’m not gonna be that. And I said, that’s what I’m a that’s what I’m a be every day. And that’s what I worked on every single day from the time I started my business. Nice. And that’s why you see action move the way he moves because of the simple fact is that I practice this And I Care my focus on that, and I and I go back to the because and the why I’m here every single moment The I’m faced with a tough moment.
Action Jackson [00:30:30]:
And that’s why I’m good at pressure.
James [00:30:32]:
I love it. I love it. Playing the victor and not the victim. Yeah. Get stuff done.
Action Jackson [00:30:37]:
Playing Call offense. Only defense Action when I have to be.
James [00:30:41]:
I love it. Yep. So one of the challenges that I find, and I’m betting that you have this as well, is you got this drive and you got this philosophy of life, let’s call it
Action Jackson [00:30:51]:
Mhmm.
James [00:30:51]:
Where it’s positive, you’re going in the right direction, and you’re growing something. And then you go to hire an employee, and you have a hard time finding someone that’s got that same or even relatively close to that kind of drive. So what do you do in that situation? Do you hire someone and be like, well, they can do the job? Do you hire someone, try to train them to get your insights? Or what do you do there?
Action Jackson [00:31:16]:
Man, that’s an interesting question. And I meet people where they at. Right? And, like, when you’re thinking about being open minded, you don’t expect nobody to do anything that you haven’t showed them. And that’s why I feel like a lot of people go wrong at. It’s like you haven’t talked about it. You haven’t exercised certain things. So why you expect it? So why you expect something from them that you guys ain’t talked about it or haven’t exercised it? So I always look at it in that aspect so I don’t get drained Because it’s easily for somebody to come over in in in your, you know, in your space and drain you based on, you know, x you know, before things that I just expected you to know. So I don’t expect nobody to know.
Action Jackson [00:32:11]:
I just keep people every every time I keep people in the same bubble and let them show what they can do or I tell them certain things. And once I tell you certain things and we go down those example roads, then that’s when my my standards for you goes higher and higher because now now we’ve been down that road. So if that made sense is meeting people where they at Alright. All the time.
James [00:32:38]:
No. I get it. I get it. I mean, culture of the business is a huge thing.
Action Jackson [00:32:41]:
Mhmm.
James [00:32:42]:
So and it’s Authentic. I’ve noticed that there are some people that just have negative kind of a gray cloud going on. And if you’re not careful, that gray cloud can bleed onto you and your bubble.
Action Jackson [00:32:54]:
Remove yourself from that. Mhmm. Don’t let those people in your bubble. The that’s what you need to understand is, like, understanding what you can deal with. Right? Because you have On option The be around that person. Mhmm. If you’re negative, I don’t want On to have nothing nothing to do with you because remember I’m protecting my energy. And if I bring a negative energy around me, then I’m the problem.
James [00:33:22]:
Sure.
Action Jackson [00:33:22]:
Let’s see. Okay.
James [00:33:23]:
See that? That’s Action.
Action Jackson [00:33:24]:
That’s that’s the attitude you need to have. Mhmm. If you’re allowing yourself to be around this negativity, who’s the problem? Is it that is it the negative problem or you’re allowing yourself to be around it?
James [00:33:38]:
Oh, I love it. I love it. Taking On.
Action Jackson [00:33:40]:
Taking responsibility out the gate.
James [00:33:42]:
Yeah. I love it. And right at the moment, not not letting it dangle The Care.
Action Jackson [00:33:47]:
Because if you go on these journeys and you understand yourself, you understand your triggers. Remember that. You understand your your volume level. Like, can you take it? I already know off the bat. I don’t need to try it anymore. I’ve been there in that role before.
James [00:34:03]:
Alright. Oh, I love it. I love it. Tell me some of The success stories you have with employees that Care probably looking for just typical run On the mill landscaping company. They come across Action Jackson, the freight train of positivity Care, and he’s taking care of business The they’re like, woah. What’s going on here?
Action Jackson [00:34:22]:
Well, one of one of my first employees that I have, he was a kid. His name was Action, and I did a youth program with back in the day. That’s pretty much right after I got out of college and stuff. And, and he ended up being with me until he was 22. Okay. So one of my success stories is showing from a 14 year old kid until he was 22. That was like night and day because I’ve seen them grow into the business. Yeah.
Action Jackson [00:34:56]:
So to see a child to grow into a man in my industry, that was pretty dope. And then I took his On I took his out I I Book his thinking and then let him into my world and say, hey, man. This is what you need to do. So him running up under me and growing up under me, he really became a good decision maker. So, seeing that in real time, that was one of my biggest highlights.
James [00:35:24]:
Alright.
Action Jackson [00:35:25]:
The other highlight was just the other day. It was like, so we was hiring for snow removal just this last winter, right? Because we did a training program and we had enough guys that came On, but then we had more jobs that we accepted after the program. So we was like, okay, well, we need more guides and then they can just like, they can just like, shadow until they get to the program in March because we offer The. We offer a protege. So we call that a protege stage. So this guy comes in and it was a day he only snowed like twice over an inch. So this day is we’re getting over an inch cause that’s our trigger. Trigger is that’s when we go out.
Action Jackson [00:36:20]:
So this guy comes in Book for a job and I’m not doing The interview. I walk in on The interview, from out there already doing some services. And I Call into the interview room and there’s this young man right there. I don’t know him from Adam and Eve. And I Book him look up him, look him down and I say, how bad you On work? He said, man, I’d rather do I’d do anything for work. I say, well, you ready to go today? So the man strapped up, he said, I really can’t do it today because I’m so hungry. He had no food. He had no money to eat.
James [00:36:59]:
Oh.
Action Jackson [00:37:00]:
Yeah. And he had no shoes. He had no gear at the time. The so when he decided that he said, yes. I said, what I’m gonna do is I’m The feed you. I said, I think I got some extra boots and I think I got some gear for you. Not only did this man get some new shoes, new gear, he put $200 in his pocket. The man worked for sixteen hours.
James [00:37:24]:
Dang.
Action Jackson [00:37:25]:
Straight.
James [00:37:26]:
Nice.
Action Jackson [00:37:27]:
And then that was like one of my biggest success stories on action. Like, that’s Action. Like, you really in real time Yeah. Help somebody. And this is On employee this is well, he’s an employee in a, he’s an employee and he’s in a, in a protege, stage right now and he’s going to he’s On be a part of the next class. But this is somebody that came to us, didn’t didn’t have too much anything, looking for opportunity, come to JYC and things happen right that day. And that’s the opportunity that I see myself in the community just being a big impact. And whatever we can do to help that, that’s the type of things that we’re gonna do to impact our community.
Action Jackson [00:38:15]:
Nice.
James [00:38:16]:
That’s super cool. So he just walked in looking for a job? Or he
Action Jackson [00:38:20]:
Yeah. He called On. It was like, he he set up a appointment for that interview. Okay. But at the same time, he he had too much. You know what I’m saying? So we did what we did. We did what we did, and it felt really awesome. It felt really great, man.
James [00:38:37]:
Yeah. And he followed through as well. Right?
Action Jackson [00:38:39]:
Because he just The, thanks
James [00:38:40]:
for the boots. See you later.
Action Jackson [00:38:41]:
Yep. He coulda got the Care. Thanks for the boots, but he’s been on time, Business responsive, and and ready to go for the next class.
James [00:38:50]:
That’s awesome. The is super cool. So when you when you interview, what are the things that you’re looking for in a candidate? Well
Action Jackson [00:39:00]:
so if you don’t have a a lot of experience and if we not like and we need to pick up all the extra work, We On be in like a employment seeking because remember we get all our employees from the program now.
James [00:39:16]:
Mhmm. So
Action Jackson [00:39:16]:
they go through the program and then they get placed in our Business. And then we choose the best employees, that could be from the program and then move them over. So, and I pride and I pride. So just for my pride stuff, like what we Book for is people The got transportation, got state license, that’s, responsible, that’s engaging, that’s looking to be an inspiration, that’s looking to put in The energy in a good cause, that’s looking to fit into our culture. Right? Because we’re big on community bridging and business bridging. So we ask those type of questions and we’re seeing if they can be on time, if they can even come to work on time and be that type of person. And the ultimate is what type of experience that you that you got.
James [00:40:11]:
Right on. So how do you figure that out if they have that stuff? The responsibility, the energy, all that stuff. Oh. Just in one interview Yeah. On to be like, hey. You wanna marry me? Yeah. An hour to figure out if you’re cool or not.
Action Jackson [00:40:24]:
Well, we got certain we got a we got a grid that we read off. Okay. So we already got a pre grid that we read off that, you know, that we tapped into The we kinda, you know, went through all the nicks and, nicks and bumps on the questionnaire sheets that we have On the, The The, if they got a resume, we look at The, but we don’t really go off of that. We go on The feeling and the energy that they bringing. Right? Okay. And if I ain’t in there if I ain’t in there to get that good read on them, you know, my fiancee, she it’s only me and my fiancee that’s doing the hiring and firing. So she she I’ve been with her for nine Yard. So she really picked up on a lot of my a lot of my, good, you know, instincts.
Action Jackson [00:41:16]:
Yeah. Mhmm.
James [00:41:17]:
So you work with your fiance?
Action Jackson [00:41:19]:
Yes.
James [00:41:20]:
You guys haven’t killed each other yet?
Action Jackson [00:41:21]:
No. We ain’t. Yeah. We actually do pretty good, man. And we realized to seek to say The really rarely works out. But On a and and and our good faith is that, man, we understand what we doing and we understand the journey is gonna be tough. And when we get to some of our tough times in our relationship is that we ask ourselves, I mean, we tell ourselves, remember why we got together. Mhmm.
Action Jackson [00:41:48]:
Remember the reason why we love each The. And we know how to separate work from
James [00:41:54]:
relationship. No. That’s huge. Yeah. That’s huge. Some people don’t I don’t know of many spouses or people that are in some form of romantic relationship that work together that that has lasted. Who? I don’t I mean, I can think of maybe two that I know of, but, I mean, from years ago, so I don’t know if they’d be together now.
Action Jackson [00:42:18]:
I took I took her off the market my third year being with her.
James [00:42:23]:
Alright.
Action Jackson [00:42:24]:
And then ever since then, she’s been working at JYC and now she is 51% older of the print on demand. Oh, nice. Yes. I ain’t that pretty much
James [00:42:35]:
She’s your boss now.
Action Jackson [00:42:37]:
She’s my boss on that end And then she’s also a owner of, the workforce development. Okay. Mhmm.
James [00:42:46]:
Very cool.
Action Jackson [00:42:47]:
Yep. So she worked Call The she and her work pays off. You know what I’m saying? Because we was thinking like, well, she wanted a ownership of, Jackson’s Yard Care because she is the backbone of customer service. When you talk about customer service, Chanel Shields is where it’s at. But we’re gonna get married. I believe our date is twenty two thousand Authentic six. Okay. We we’ve been engaged for we’ve been engaged for eight years.
Action Jackson [00:43:21]:
Oh, nice. Because we, you know, we we know what we want. We’re not rushing. Yeah. We’re building. We have a structure that we’re putting together. And, and, so when we get Care, then she’ll come fifty fifty On then she’ll have Business know how that works Yeah. To win Wisconsin.
Action Jackson [00:43:45]:
So Yep.
James [00:43:46]:
It it’s interesting hearing you talk about that because I just came off this, this morning when I’m doing paperwork and stuff like that. I was listening to YouTube channel called Soft White Underbelly.
Action Jackson [00:43:59]:
Yeah.
James [00:44:00]:
And I was listening to a divorce attorney and a marriage psychologist, and they’re bantering back and forth for
Action Jackson [00:44:07]:
I know. That had to
James [00:44:08]:
be a good almost three hours.
Action Jackson [00:44:10]:
That had to be a Book, interesting conversation.
James [00:44:13]:
So interesting listening to that. The guy’s talking about prenups and all this kind of stuff. And it’s interesting because his divorce attorney, well, his job is to essentially help people split up. Right. And he’s like, my son came to me and said he’s getting Care, and he’s like and I was happy for him. And he’s like, and I’m a divorce attorney. I think marriage is a terrible idea. But but his kid is Call he’s like my own son, and the girl is cool and all that kind of stuff, but he’s like, there’s no way it’s gonna Book.
James [00:44:42]:
Mhmm. Whether in a year or fifty years or whatever like that, you just know it’s gonna end.
Action Jackson [00:44:46]:
Yeah.
James [00:44:47]:
It was very interesting The I guess, where marriage plays a role in society universally, but then entrepreneurs, you gotta have BOLD stomach, I guess, to deal with an entrepreneur as a spouse, whether on either end. Right? If you’re the entrepreneur or you’re the nonentrepreneur.
Action Jackson [00:45:04]:
Right.
James [00:45:05]:
In your case, you’re both entrepreneurs.
Action Jackson [00:45:08]:
Well, I’m a she’s growing to be an entrepreneur. She just became a business person. Okay. Like, you know, when you look at The, like Call entrepreneur grows from a business owner. Right? You go come from a business owner to an entrepreneur if you On go into the different stages. Like, an entrepreneur, you know, doesn’t work in his business. He works on his business and he creates, systems and processes. A business owner works in his business day in day out.
Action Jackson [00:45:38]:
And when if he ain’t there, things don’t doesn’t work. Okay? That’s what a business owner is and he just sticks to that one business. Right? And that’s his full time job. And people really need to know that. You know what I’m saying? Because some people would just be like entrepreneur. I’m On entrepreneur but yet, you know, you just sell shirts or something. They need to know The, you know, the definitions behind what they’re working.
James [00:46:04]:
The own a job.
Action Jackson [00:46:05]:
Then you own a job. They
James [00:46:07]:
don’t necessarily.
Action Jackson [00:46:07]:
You got the most special job in On the world actually
James [00:46:10]:
Right.
Action Jackson [00:46:11]:
That never never you never have days off, you know. Because owning a business, you are the Jacksons. You are the start and you are the finish.
James [00:46:21]:
I joke with my employees every once in a while. I said, I punched in once and I haven’t got to punch out yet.
Action Jackson [00:46:27]:
I like that one. I might have to steal that one. It’s all yours. It’s funny because
James [00:46:32]:
you just because always, I mean, whether it’s employees calling in or some I don’t know. The fire of the day. Right? Yeah. There’s always something going on.
Action Jackson [00:46:43]:
I was a business owner for I was a business owner for fifteen years On my business. I’m just now getting to the stage of being an entrepreneur. Right? Because I have learned my business. I if somebody is not there, I know how to pick up any machine and operate. It. And I’m not shy to go out there on my own jobs. I’m not shy to go out there on a service job. That’s not me.
Action Jackson [00:47:14]:
Because once you understand your businesses from every Care, every aspect, you’re gonna be a better entrepreneur at the end of the day.
James [00:47:23]:
True story. Yeah. Absolutely. That’s the that’s the game right there. Yeah. Yeah. I love it. So you’ve learned a lot.
James [00:47:31]:
You’ve been through a lot. You started some businesses.
Action Jackson [00:47:34]:
Mhmm.
James [00:47:34]:
I’m guessing that you have some advice for people that are considering starting their own gig. Yep. Let’s start with advice specific to the landscape industry.
Action Jackson [00:47:43]:
Alright. What part do you On know? Do you want me to just throw out any? You wanna have a topic or do you want to know what’s the
James [00:47:49]:
Let’s start with equipment because I imagine there’s some stuff where you’re because that’s expensive. Right?
Action Jackson [00:47:55]:
Equipment and it goes up. And then with these tariffs
James [00:47:59]:
Yeah. So you
Action Jackson [00:48:00]:
never know what things you’re gonna be at.
James [00:48:02]:
It’s it’s gonna be an interesting interesting challenge to the game that we have to play.
Action Jackson [00:48:07]:
Yes, sir. Yeah. So let’s start with equipment. Equipment is efficient because do you buy new equipment? Do you finance it? Do you pay for it? You know, if you Call you actually listen to somebody that wasn’t able to get loans. Right? I didn’t go to the bank and get loans. What I did was use my hard earned money. I think that’s like one of the greatest things you can do anyways is use your hard earned money and gradually work yourself up. Right? If you’re talking about landscaping, landscaping Call landscape and can get broad.
Action Jackson [00:48:44]:
Figure out what you On to do in the industry and that and focus on that for a long period of time.
James [00:48:52]:
So you’re talking whether that’s mowing Yep. Or moving rock or Yep.
Action Jackson [00:48:57]:
Underground or whatever. If it’s like installing materials, know that therefore you Care you can really cater to that. You can just work around The, I mean, work in that other than trying to broadly just buy all these tools.
James [00:49:13]:
Sure. It’d rather be everything to everybody when you’re first starting out.
Action Jackson [00:49:16]:
Right.
James [00:49:17]:
That’s a recipe for a very expensive disaster.
Action Jackson [00:49:19]:
Yeah. It is. Like, when I bought all the stuff that I did, I kinda if I decided I was On do a new job, then I did the job and I felt The, oh, I need this next tool to make that job easier. But I did like the job and it was lucrative. Right? I’m always trying to figure out what can I do nowadays or when I even when I was growing, what can I do to be more lucrative doing the same thing?
James [00:49:46]:
Fair. Fair. Tell me a story also in that. You buy us equipment. You gotta put it somewhere.
Action Jackson [00:49:52]:
Oh, there’s another
James [00:49:53]:
So tell me about buildings, leases, all that kind of stuff. Because you got a decent sized place now.
Action Jackson [00:49:57]:
10,000 square feet.
James [00:49:58]:
That’s healthy.
Action Jackson [00:49:59]:
That’s a
James [00:49:59]:
small grocery store size.
Action Jackson [00:50:01]:
Yeah. It is. Actually, that’s, let me see what, that’s half of a a high b.
James [00:50:10]:
Right? Right.
Action Jackson [00:50:11]:
You’re right. I mean,
James [00:50:12]:
that’s that’s decent sized shower.
Action Jackson [00:50:13]:
Yeah. That’s a decent sized shower.
James [00:50:15]:
But that wasn’t day On?
Action Jackson [00:50:16]:
No. Day one, I was I did it out of my momma’s garage.
James [00:50:19]:
Okay. Right? So you just start build upon your success.
Action Jackson [00:50:23]:
Yep. Until the neighbors get sick of you.
James [00:50:27]:
You’re fighting up the The and sick
Action Jackson [00:50:29]:
of them. I’m trying to tell you. Cut that out. But we had great neighbors. My mom was my mom was very Action. And, you know, I don’t think she she haven’t paid for a loan service since 02/2009. So shout out to you. So That’s awesome.
Action Jackson [00:50:47]:
So started out there and then my, Call, he had a he had some space. He had a 15, square foot, outbuilding, you know, dry space. 1,500? Yep. Okay. Nice size space and parking available. We made a deal. We did that for three years. And then, you know, as the prices went up, he wanted more for his shop.
Action Jackson [00:51:12]:
So I wasn’t able to kinda we couldn’t find figure out a a landing spot. So I ended up going to a u I mean, a storage unit.
James [00:51:23]:
Mhmm.
Action Jackson [00:51:24]:
Bought the biggest space there, bought some dry space. And I did that for about four years and believe it or not, that’s where I actually came from before I got this building. Wow. Yep. And I was looking for space throughout these whole four years and I couldn’t find no space that can fit Action can, you know, that Care that I was looking for either was not enough space in the inside or no space on the outside. You know, I couldn’t find that I couldn’t find that, that balance Care. Or if, you know, triple net or whatever the case may be. If I did find The space, it was way too much or, way out of, you know, range that I wanted to be.
Action Jackson [00:52:11]:
Mhmm. So four years go Book. I’m just so lucky, man. That’s why I say God is good and being patient is the number one key in business. You don’t rush what’s not available. Because anytime you try to rush things, it’s not available. You find yourself in a bad predicament later on. So keep that one.
Action Jackson [00:52:30]:
That’s a nugget. So what I mean by that? So let’s move forward. So when, so also in this period in this four years, I was trying to buy a house. Okay. Me and my fiance. And we found the The. That was a that was a that’s a whole different story, but we found the house and we’re going up for signing on The following Tuesday. It was like Thursday.
Action Jackson [00:52:58]:
And my fiance tells me because she knows that I always go for Craigslist and I always go searching for, buildings for our business. And I don’t know why she said this that day. She was like, you should, start when The last time if you Book for a place you should Book? So I said, you’re right. Then I said, I went back to digging and I found 922 South Burn Street. And I called Jeff up because Jeff is the owner. I said, hey, Jeff. You know, I’m interested On coming to see the place. So I set up a a walk through with him on Monday, And I’m looking around this big old building while I get Care.
Action Jackson [00:53:45]:
I’m like, man, this is way bigger than what we want The we need. And it’s now it’s BOLD the rent. So I’m On to about 2,500 in rent space and dry space at this storage unit and they’re getting sick of me because now I bought all this stuff and I got stuff outside that I I’m, you know, that’s against the rules to have and this and this and that. So I walk away having after having a conversation with Jeff and I was talking to my fiance because Jeff gave us really positive vibes. Like, if we want it, we can take it. And I asked my fiance, I said, I don’t know about this because it’s like double double the rent and we’re about to go into, you know, spending double the amount On, on living spaces as well. So the only thing I would remember her saying was, if you don’t get it, you won’t regret it. And that’s what’s having a good spouse is there for.
Action Jackson [00:54:49]:
And somebody be in there to be that voice and to give you something to think about. Because she ain’t pressuring me into anything. She’s being a good spouse and protecting, you know, my decision or making that decision on my own. So the next day Care, that’s saying that I I had to call my I had to call my dad, obviously, because he’s one of my biggest mentor, Mel Ray Melman Jackson. And, you know, I’m calling some of the other people that’s, you know, has, you know, some good thought process. And The was like, this can work. And then based off of the mentor I told you earlier about dropping out of school, I said, wow. You know, is this is this where, you know, it comes into wishing? Because I can see things.
Action Jackson [00:55:39]:
I’m like, you know, I can see things happening down the line. So I I thought I thought about all of this stuff. And the next morning I said, I called Jeff up as I’m driving to go sign my house. Don’t forget my keys. I said, Jeff, I decided I’m gonna take it. So The day I bought my house, the day I signed up for my house is the same day. I got a 10,000 square foot warehouse. Dang.
Action Jackson [00:56:06]:
Most it was the most, like, dramatic week in a good way that Action have. So I ended up signing my house, going back out there after I got my keys from my house, signing the, deed to the I mean, signing The rent lease to the space. And On one day, I moved. I mean, I was about to move my whole life. And that’s the day that we became residents. I mean, not Business residents of Sun Prairie.
James [00:56:39]:
Nice. I love it.
Action Jackson [00:56:41]:
It was dramatic. So in that month, I had to move. I was in my I was in my place in Oregon for four Yard, and then I was in my place of business in in the storage unit for four years. So I had to move those two things out in the same month. Nice. And that was big.
James [00:56:58]:
You know, it’s so interesting because I’ve interviewed a lot of people here. We’re talking over 300 episodes. And the number of people that have a story where they’re like, I got married or I got divorced. I had a kid. I started a business. I moved.
Action Jackson [00:57:14]:
Yeah.
James [00:57:14]:
I did I got new software, new employees, whatever, all The stuff in a very short amount of time. Not every time, but just On, like, I did all these things. I moved across the country. Mhmm. All in The, it was just like it seems like a season of change is not unusual in the business world.
Action Jackson [00:57:34]:
No.
James [00:57:34]:
We’re just like, we gotta move some levers. We gotta make some changes. This is gonna happen. Let’s go forward and do it.
Action Jackson [00:57:40]:
Let’s do it.
James [00:57:41]:
It is nothing that I ever expected. But even people that I’ve known for decades that I’m like, you got divorced, had a kid, moved across the country, and started a business in this six month period. Yep.
Action Jackson [00:57:53]:
It’s crazy when people really lock in to what they want
